Starting an apprenticeship is exciting — but it isn’t cheap. Tools, kit, and other essential extras can add up fast, especially in the first few months of a new trade.

The Worshipful Company of Smiths is dedicated to supporting the crafts, artisans, and creatives of our city. We have a proud history of backing apprentices, and we understand the costs and expenses involved in starting a trade and learning new skills — not just tools, equipment, and workwear, but the cost of travel to college or other expenses to further your learning.

We are once again offering grants to apprentices who live or work in the area covered by Lichfield District Council. The scheme, known as the Denis Parsons Foundation, exists to help apprentices with the practical costs of training — putting funding directly in the hands of those who need it.

Open to every trade

If you are starting or already undertaking an apprenticeship in the district, we want to support you. There’s no lengthy application process: just send us your CV and a few details about your apprenticeship, including what the grant would be used for. Applications are reviewed regularly by our selection committee.

How to apply

Applying is simple. Just complete the online application form on our Apprenticeships page
